My equipment rant!

I am constantly asked about my equipment. Guests at weddings, friends and family get togethers, facebook, you name it!

I’ve always thought that people spend way too much time and money on equipment, and no time  learning good photography technique!

Learn about lighting, (natural light is free!!!) good composition, and practice, shoot, shoot more!

You don’t need to go out and buy the latest, billion pixel camera, or top of the line lenses either! I started shooting  professionally long before the onslaught of digital.

I used a fully manual entry level film camera. Canon A-1 with one lens!!! A 35MM. It worked amazingly, never needed a repair, infact I still have them sitting in my studio, as reminders of the good old days!

Some of my favorite images today were shot on those cameras! Today things are advancing so quickly! It’s really mind boggling!

If you can afford the expensive toys, by all means go for it! They sure are nice to have! But if you want to be a good photographer, learn how to shoot with the minimum!

Take a good course (No I don’t teach workshops either, there are about billion photographers who do them already!)

Just to prove my point this photo was taken recently on my daily bike rides, on lake Ontario.

Shot with my iphone! Yes, and not even the latest! It’s a first Gen Iphone! (can’t wait to get the new one!) But don’t worry, if you hire me I won’t show up to shoot with my iphone! (I may take a couple fun snaps though!)

FYI for those who still care; I currently work with Canons 7D and 40D. and an assortment of Canon prime and zoom lenses.

Andrew, Thank you for this post. I couldn’t agree more and have the same conversations at weddings !
I too have my (mostly retired) film cameras adorning my office as a reminder of simpler times.
My favorite was my Contax G1. Minimal and perfect.

I just love your work and this blog has totally encouraged and inspired me! I ALSO shoot with a 40D and a 7D and love my Canon primes: 50 1.4 and 85 1.8.
Keep shooting!
